Bail-out Bill Fails

With a vote of 205 Ayes, 228 Nays, the massive $700,000,000,000 (700 billion) bail-out bill failed in the U.S. House. Interestingly enough, the vote was about 60%-40% Democrats, and 40%-60% Republicans (ayes-nays).

On Wall Street, the DJIA dropped 777 points; a one-day record plunge.

Where did that $700B figure come from for the bailout? Must-read article on the LA Times "Top of the Ticket" blog:

"It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number."

Amazing. Simply amazing. Secretary Paulson just pulled the $700B figure out of his hat?

Interesting side note: several juveniles stole over 40 political yard signs Sunday night in Fort Gibson. They blamed it on the bail-out.

One man said the group absconded with the signs in protest of the federal government’s plans to bail out Wall Street banks. He said it was an act of civil disobedience designed to point out what the group of “five patriotic American men” sees as the decay of the democratic process.

“There is no reason to vote anymore because the democratic process is failing,” James J. Cooper said Monday. “These large corporations on Wall Street commit crimes and then expect us to bail them out.”

Cooper, 21, said he and his comrades hoped their acts would spark a public debate about corporate greed run amok. He referred to the group’s actions as patriotic.

Oh really? Sounds like a likely story, doesn't it?

The Corporation Commission race remains extremely fluid, with Murphy falling 7% and Roth dropping 3%. The Undecided column rose by 10 points, the exact number Murphy and Roth fell by.

TvPoll had some interesting commentary on the past few weeks polling for this race:

Russia to start new miltiary build-up

John McCain's Remarks on the Economic Crisis

America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen.

Last Friday, I laid out my proposal and I have since discussed my priorities and concerns with the bill the Administration has put forward. Senator Obama has expressed his priorities and concerns. This morning, I met with a group of economic advisers to talk about the proposal on the table and the steps that we should take going forward. I have also spoken with members of Congress to hear their perspective.

It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the Administration's proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time.

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

Following September 11th, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now. Americans across our country lament the fact that partisan divisions in Washington have prevented us from addressing our national challenges. Now is our chance to come together to prove that Washington is once again capable of leading this country.

I think this is a brilliant, risky move on McCain's part. He puts Country First, even during a hot campaign. He's even taking campaign ads off the air, and canceling media interviews. This could make Obama look really bad if doesn't follow suit... (and it gives Sarah Palin even more time to prepare for debates, etc.)

Most of the little movement in this race came from Independents, who flipped from Inhofe to Rice (from 50-20, to 25-55). Inhofe holds a very large lead, thwarting Democrat hopes to upset him in November.

Dana Murphy continues to hold a lead in the Corporation Commission race, extending it by nearly four points this week. The large percentage of undecideds is easily attributed to the lack of attention paid to this race so far, and the relative lack of knowledge of the Corporation Commission in general. Most of the movement in the numbers came from Democrats; Murphy gained 5%, and Roth lost 8%.

"On Thursday night, John McCain’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention bested Barack Obama’s record-breaking viewership numbers from last week by 500,000 viewers.

More than 38.9 million people tuned in to coverage of the final night of the GOP convention. In comparison, Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic convention drew 38.4 million viewers.

McCain Jumps to Lead

USA Today/Gallup General Election Poll, conducted Sept. 5th-7th, 2008

Likely Voters:

Registered Voters:

The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/— 3 points for both samples.

This is huge, folks. McCain/Palin has eliminated Obama/Biden's convention bump, and added some. To be over 50% at this point is amazing; Obama has only broken 50 in a few polls, and typically was 50%-51% among likelies.

A ten-point lead among likely voters is huge for McCain, the candidate who was dead-in-the-water scarcely a year ago. It's huge for any candidate.

I think they meant he was found guilty again, not that he killed her again.

Palin's Audience Rival's Obama's

More than 40 million tune into Palin's speech
Both Palin and Obama reached about the same number of viewers

According to the AP, over 40 million viewers watch Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin's acceptence speech Wednesday night.

Nielsen Media Research estimated that 37.2 million people watch her speak on either ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, Fox News, or MSNBC. PBS estimated about 4 million viewers on their channel.

In contrast, Barack Obama's acceptence speech had an estimated 38.4 viewers on 10 channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, BET, TV One, Univision and Telemundo); over 40 million when PBS and C-SPAN are added.

But channel for channel, Palin was the bigger draw.

Obama's speech averaged 3.8 million viewers for each of the 10 broadcast and cable networks counted by Nielsen. Palin's speech, which was carried live by four fewer networks, averaged 6.2 million.

Obama: I Have More Executive Experience Than Palin

Barack Obama contends that he is more experienced in executive matters than Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin because he has managed his presidential campaign for the past 18 months.

“Well, my understanding is that Governor Palin’s town of Wasilly [sic] has, I think, 50 employees. We’ve got 2,500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe $12 million a year. You know, we have a budget of about three times that just for the month. So I think that our ability to manage large systems and to execute I think has been made clear over the last couple of years,” Obama said.

Obama mispronounced Wasilla, the town where Palin was mayor. You know, he doesn't like small towns.

He also refused to acknowledge she is governor of Alaska, a state that had a $9B budget surplus this year, and has over 24,000 employees scattered over the largest state in the Union.
