Oklahoma Outshines Texas, other Red States in Conservative Rankings

CPAC Host Releases Scores of Oklahoma Legislature

Alexandria, VA (June 11th)— Oklahoma lawmakers voted more conservatively than lawmakers in other states controlled by Republicans such as Texas, Kansas and Ohio, according to the just-released ratings of the 2019 session by The American Conservative Union Foundation (ACUF), host of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

In the 2019 session, the Oklahoma Legislature earned an average conservative score of 68.85%, outperforming neighboring Texas (56.75%) and Kansas (65.26%) as well as Ohio (63.06%).



Oklahoma also became one of the only states in the country with a conservative legislature (65% or better) and also have congressional representation who qualified for ACUF’s “Coalition of the Radical Left.” Democrat Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-05)—who campaigned as a moderate—earned a 10.34% score in her freshman year in the Oklahoma congressional delegation (72.42% average).

“At a time when media darling Rep. Kendra Horn says the state is ripe for a ‘blue wave,’ Oklahoma’s state lawmakers followed the direction of the People and once again ranked as one of the country’s most conservative legislatures,” said ACU Chairman Matt Schlapp. “In the 2019 session, state lawmakers fulfilled the will of their constituents and eliminated barriers to health insurance, strengthened important constitutional rights and made commonsense reforms to stop wasting scarce taxpayer resources. Meanwhile, Rep. Horn colluded with Speaker Pelosi to socialize American health care, squander taxpayer funds and seize property of law-abiding citizens without due process. Rep. Horn may believe auditioning for the ‘The Squad’ will buy her favor with liberal elites, but our Ratings make it clear that Oklahomans prefer the principled leadership of the state’s conservative lawmakers to her ‘Socialists’ Got Talent’ performance.”

A total of 41 lawmakers earned House Republicans (77.75%) earned a slightly more conservative score than Senate Republicans (76.43%). Just over 28% of lawmakers earned awards for scoring 80% or better. Democrats earned an average score of 39.30%, nearly 30 points above Congresswoman Horn.

ACUF’s Ratings of Congress and Ratings of the States are initiatives of ACUF’s Center for Legislative Accountability (CLA). These ratings are designed to reflect how over 8,000 elected officials across the nation view the role of government while illustrating the differences between chambers of the legislature and revealing lawmakers’ positions on a wide variety of issues that directly affect citizens.

ACU Foundation reviewed each piece of legislation voted on in both chambers of the legislature to produce average scores of each chamber as well as individual scores for each sitting member.
