OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell announced today the appointees for the Oklahoma Golf Trail Commission, which is tasked with developing a list of golf courses to be designated as the Oklahoma Golf Trail. The Lt. Governor will serve on the commission along with Gary Bridwell, Lou Dechert, Sheila Dills, Jared Gallagher, Steve Gelnar, Charlie Hannema, David Jones, Michael Love, and Ken MacLeod.
“From golf journalists to collegiate champions to course superintendents, the Oklahoma Golf Trail appointees have the knowledge and experience to choose the best courses to represent our state," said Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell. "After seeing the success other states have had with their golf trails, we know it is time for Oklahoma to highlight our diverse golf scene. I look forward to working with this qualified group to bring more tourism and growth to our state.”
In May 2022, House Bill 3647, authored by former Representative Sheila Dills, was signed into law. The bill creates the Oklahoma Golf Trail Commission, a nine-member commission tasked with creating a list of 15 to 25 golf courses to become the official Oklahoma Golf Trail.
“I look forward to working with Lt. Governor Pinnell and other members of the Commission to develop a world-class Oklahoma Golf Trail,” said Dills. “Along with fabulous courses, golf in Oklahoma is rich in history with major championships, fantastic players, and programs. The Trail will be another tool to help grow Oklahoma’s economy, promote our wonderful golf courses, our State, and the game of golf.”
The Oklahoma Golf Trail follows dozens of successful golf trails across the country, most notably the Robert Trent Jones (RTJ) Golf Trail in Alabama. The RTJ Trail had a major economic impact in Alabama, transforming tourism from a $3 billion industry in 1990 to an almost $20 billion industry in 2021. The trail helped positively transform the state’s reputation, attracting many new companies and residents.
