OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (Feb. 27th) - Today, Americans for Prosperity - Oklahoma (AFP-OK) celebrates the elimination of Oklahoma's state grocery tax - a landmark achievement that will ease the burden on families across the state struggling to make ends meet under the record high inflation caused by the Biden administration.
While the grocery tax cut will help residents all across the state, AFP-OK urges lawmakers to take up reforms that will work to grow the whole state's economy. With a governor who has said he will sign any tax cut that crosses his desk and a large majority of Oklahomans in support of eliminating the income tax altogether, there's no reason for the legislature to stop here.
AFP-OK State Director, John Tidwell, made the following statement:
"As we celebrate knocking on 30,000 doors for tax relief this month, we are greatly encouraged by the Senate's actions on tax reform. But Oklahomans still need real reform - not just cuts here and there. It's time for the legislature to chart a path toward zero income taxes.
"Sadly, much of the money Oklahomans will save on groceries could now go toward their energy bills, the legislature is now considering opening the doors for utility companies to charge even higher rates. AFP-OK will remain committed to fighting against arbitrary price hikes and regressive taxes of all kinds - no matter if they come from the Oklahoma legislature or the Biden administration."
Tidwell authored an op-ed in the Tulsa World last week arguing that Oklahoma's economy and budget are in great shape and that eliminating the income tax would trigger an "economic renaissance" in the state.
AFP-OK will oppose the "Right of First Refusal" bill that passed out of the Oklahoma House Utilities Committee last week, which would reinforce major utility companies' monopoly in the state and guarantee higher rates for all Oklahomans.
Through broad-based grassroots outreach, Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is driving long-term solutions to the country’s biggest problems. AFP activists engage friends and neighbors on key issues and encourage them to take an active role in building a culture of mutual benefit, where people succeed by helping one another. AFP recruits and unites Oklahomans behind a common goal of advancing policies that will help people improve their lives. For more information, visit www.AmericansForProsperity.org.
