OKLAHOMA CITY (March 20th) — Sen. Dusty Deevers, R-Elgin, released the following statement concerning comments made by Sen. Greg Treat, R-Oklahoma City, at a press conference on Tuesday.
“On Tuesday, during an interview with KOCO 5, Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat attempted to crawl out of the ad hominem hole he dug by calling Senator Nathan Dahm and me ‘terrorists’ for lawfully advocating for our constituents. His chosen shovel was another defamatory term, ‘toddlers.’
“I had hoped for a higher level of professionalism and decorum rather than resorting to name-calling. Such a leadership style only exposes its own immaturity. Also, it’s important to note that Governor Stitt supported our efforts.
“True leadership entails treating all constituents fairly. Unfortunately, the current Senate structure allows a select few Senators to control which citizens of our state can be ignored, dismissed, and filibustered by the status quo process. Until the truth comes to light, how many other Oklahomans believe they are represented when they are, in fact, ignored?
“As George Orwell famously stated in Animal Farm, ‘all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.’
“The Senate rules are flawed, and most of us know it. The constituents whom leadership chooses to starve or feed crumbs and scraps know it. Name-calling has become a symptom of this flawed system. Our aim is to kick the door open so the disinfecting light can shine, and then we can fix it for the betterment of all Oklahomans. The Senate has a moral obligation to do better by our constituents.
“In Matthew 18:4, Jesus says, ‘whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.’ This childlike humility and adherence to the Golden Rule should be the cornerstone of Senate leadership, treating fellow senators with the same respect they expect for themselves instead of playing favorites, retaliating against dissent, and silencing the voices of various Senators and their districts across the state.
“Every district elects its Senators through democratic processes and deserves equal representation in the Senate. We advocate not for an outcome in which all senators pass the same number of bills but for equal representation in the initial hearing of bills and a fair process throughout.
“I do not mind sticking my neck out and facing opposition from leadership. I was not elected to conform to establishment norms; my priority is to legislate in a manner that honors God and faithfully represents the people who elected me.
“This is no trivial infraction of our rights as citizens of this state. Do we truly have equal representation as citizens of Oklahoma? May the Lord establish the truth.”
