As Congress looks to send nearly $100,000,000 in foreign aid to Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel (and Gaza, apparently), a meager few Republicans are saying "No" -- or at least, "not until our border is secure."
According to CBS:
The three foreign aid bills would provide $26.4 billion to support Israel, $60.8 billion to bolster Ukraine and $8.1 billion to counter China in the Indo-Pacific, including billions for Taiwan. The Israel measure also includes more than $9.1 billion to address Palestinian humanitarian needs, which Democrats said was necessary for their support.
Read below for why Oklahoma Congressmen Josh Brecheen and Kevin Hern oppose all or part of this plan:
Washington, D.C. (April 19th) – Congressman Josh Brecheen issued the following statement after voting against the rule for H.R. 8034, H.R. 8035, H.R. 8036, and H.R. 8038—a $95 billion foreign aid package that will fail to secure our border.
“The constituents of Oklahoma’s 2nd Congressional District are rightly demanding that we secure our own border before we secure the borders of foreign nations. I could not support this rule that will greenlight $60 billion for Ukraine without properly securing our border,” said Congressman Josh Brecheen.
WASHINGTON, DC (April 19th) – Representative Kevin Hern (OK-01) released the following statement regarding tomorrow’s vote on a supplemental funding package for Ukraine.
“This supplemental package fails to address the number one crisis for the American people - the invasion at our southern border,” said Rep. Hern. “I have long promised never to vote for more Ukraine funding without strong border security provisions to protect Americans. We have no business sending tens of billions of dollars to Ukraine while doing absolutely nothing to end the crisis on our own Southern border. I was one of the first Members of Congress to take this stand against further Ukraine funding without border security, and there isn’t anything that will make me change my beliefs on this. The American people deserve better.”
