Trump officially nominated, selects JD Vance as running mate

As the Republican National Convention kicked off and officially nominated him for president, former President Donald Trump announced today that he has selected U.S. Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his vice presidential running mate:

Vance, who turns 40 in August, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022, after rising to some fame with a bestselling 2016 memoir (later turned into a movie), Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. Vance also served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007, as a combat correspondent with the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. For what it's worth, it seems he's also the first presidential or vice presidential candidate with a full beard since 1880.

This announcement comes two days after Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, by the grace of God only receiving a graze to the ear.

Below are some comments from Oklahoma elected officials:

Congressman Josh Brecheen (OK-02): “Senator JD Vance is committed to securing our border and putting American citizens first. It has been an honor to work with Senator Vance during my first term in office and I look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role,” said Congressman Josh Brecheen.
  • Last July, Congressman Brecheen and Senator Vance introduced the No Obamacare for Illegal Aliens Act of 2023 to protect taxpayer dollars by preventing illegal aliens from receiving taxpayer-subsidized healthcare benefits.

Congressman Kevin Hern (OK-01): “Senator JD Vance is a champion for conservative values and I am proud to have partnered with him on multiple critical issues in Congress,” said Rep Hern. “JD has been integral to the bicameral work of the Republican Study Committee and was one of the first Senators to join RSC’s bicameral efforts last year. Together, we have worked to introduce legislation that aligns with our shared vision of putting America First. I look forward to continuing this work with JD in his new role.”
  • Rep. Hern and Sen. Vance introduced joint legislation in support of America’s greatest ally, Israel earlier this year.
  • Rep. Hern and Sen. Vance introduced the Withholding Illegal Revenue Entering Drug Markets (WIRED) Act, that would tax the cartel’s international money transfers.
  • Rep. Hern hosted Sen. Vance at the weekly Republican Study Lunch in April.
