Oklahoma Freedom Caucus backs SQ834, the Citizens-only voting amendment

I'm a little late on getting this posted, but this goes into some detail on State Question 834, which is the most easily-understood state question on the ballot (SQ 833... that's a totally different matter).

Oklahoma Freedom Caucus leads the charge on only citizens voting in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (October 10th) – Yesterday, the Oklahoma Freedom Caucus led by Chairman Senator Shane Jett, joined with Americans for Citizens Voting in support of State Question 834 the Citizen-only voting amendment.

“Under the current language in the Oklahoma Constitution there isn’t a prohibition to limit voting to ONLY citizens.” Jett said. “We’ve seen liberal judges in other states who have legislated from the bench to expand voting to non-citizens including ilegal immigrants.”

State Question 834 would amend the Oklahoma Constitution by adding the word “only” to now say only citizens can vote in Oklahoma.

“This is a hugely bipartisan common sense policy,” Rep. Jim Olsen, House Vice Chair said. “Liberal places like the swamp in Washington DC may want foreigners meddling in their elections, but here in Oklahoma we know that only citizens should be casting votes.”

Senator Michael Bergstrom’s bill was the legislative vehicle for this change, Senator Nathan Dahm facilitated the procedure for advancing it through the legislature in the final days of session, and Senator Shane Jett collected over 30 senate co-authors on the bill.

In closing, Senator Jett said: “The Oklahoma Freedom Caucus was honored to have led the charge in pushing through this policy at the end of session to allow Oklahomans the chance to vote on this greatly needed Constitutional change.

We encourage all Oklahomans to vote yes on SQ834 so only citizens can vote in our State”

Over a dozen cities across the country currently allow non-citizens to vote in their elections. Americans for Citizens Voting has helped get similar language on the ballot in 8 states for the November General Election.
