State Sen. Regina Goodwin verbally spars with officer during traffic stop, cited for running stop sign

State Sen. Regina Goodwin (D-Tulsa) had a recent run-in with the law after a Tulsa County sheriff's deputy observed her rolling through two stop signs in downtown Tulsa. What could have been a routine, brief encounter and a warning turned into almost a half hour of verbally sparring with the officer and refusing fifteen requests to hand over her driver's license.

One thing led to another, and Tulsa mayor Monroe Nichols and City Councilor Laura Bellis showed up at the scene (not the type of assistance Joe Citizen gets, I'm sure), which ended in Goodwin being briefly handcuffed and ticketed. NonDoc has a good synopsis of the traffic stop here, along with bodycam footage. As NonDoc pointed out, this is the third legislator-and-law-enforcement encounter in the past two-and-a-half years that left significant egg on the overly-entitled and self-important legislators' faces.

Goodwin was elected to the State Senate in November, after serving nine years in the State House. The Tulsa County GOP is calling on her to apologize for her inexcusable behavior:

Republican Party of Tulsa County Statement on Recent TCSO Traffic Stop
The Tulsa County GOP Calls for Apology From Senator Goodwin

TULSA, OK (01/24/2025) - In light of occurrences regarding State Senator Regina Goodwin and Tulsa County Sheriff Deputy Freddie Alaniz, on January 11, 2025, where Senator Goodwin was pulled over for "floating" two stop signs and then refused dozens of requests to produce her identification, making a spectacle of herself, Tulsa County Republican Party calls for a public apology to Deputy Freddie Alaniz, the Tulsa County Sheriff's Department, her constituents, and Tulsa County citizens for her conduct that day. Senator Goodwin's contentious encounter was captured on the deputy's body cam footage and was further complicated when Tulsa City Council member, Laura Bellis, and our newly elected Mayor Monroe Nichols, arrived at the scene.

Deputy Freddie Alaniz should have been allowed to perform his job without the combatant behavior of Senator Goodwin and the intimidation tactics of Mayor Nichols and Council member Bellis. Had Senator Goodwin's reaction to being pulled over been professional and befitting a state senator, she would have left the scene with no one the wiser.

The conduct of these elected officials is unbecoming of the offices they each respectively hold, therefore the Republican Party of Tulsa County calls for them to issue a public apology to Deputy Alaniz, the Tulsa County Sheriff's Department, their constituents and the citizens of Tulsa County. We are to be examples to our youth and as an elected official should be held to a higher standard than most. At a time when municipalities across the nation experience extreme challenges filling the vacancies in their police and sheriff's department, and morale is at an all-time low, these actions do nothing to improve confidence in our recruitment process.

  1. She should have already apologized to the deputy. Political elitism run smoke. Even here in Oklahoma.

  2. Another example of "black" privilege in government. She needs to be held accountable by the Oklahoma State Senate.

    1. We're not your "blacks." You sure it's not "WIGHT" over policing? Failure to stop at a stop sign is one of those one size fits all revenue play. He gives himself away by saying, "I WAS just gonna give you a warning" line. Really? You're just going to issue a warning to someone that was speeding a blew 2 stop signs, IN HIS OWN WORDS!

  3. Shame on you, Senator Goodwin! Yahweh God only approves of one attitude: humility.
Pride and arrogance are opposite humility, not becoming of us. Skin color or ethnicity really has nothing to do with what comes out of our heart. And what is in our heart is what comes out our mouth.

  4. Another instance proving body cameras are a must. If she couldn't understand the most basic things after being stopped, how can she possibly understand bills in the legislature.

  5. He should have taken her to jail and charged her like a normal citizen, obstruction, refuing to hand over her ID and been figer printed and booked into a cell. This is why America is falling apart...They keep elcting people that think it's okay to ignore the law when it benefits them.
